FIDI is giving 2019 Conference delegates the chance to pedal their way to Amsterdam in support of Operation Smile Honduras.
The Netherlands is one of the world’s great cycling nations. So what better way to get fit and help a wonderful cause than by pedalling the scenic route to the 2019 FIDI Conference in Amsterdam?
Everyone who takes part in the FIDI Cycle Challenge will be helping FIDI in its final push to reach its Operation Smile Honduras (OSH) fundraising target of €150,000. The two-day tour will take cyclists of all abilities – with the help of an experienced support team – from London through the scenic lowlands of England and The Netherlands to finish at the Conference hotel, NH Grand Krasnapolsky in Amsterdam.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime event that offers a unique networking opportunity, as participants ride alongside their peers while taking in some wonderful northern European countryside. On day one, cyclists will cover an 83-mile/134km route through the meandering country roads of Essex, before taking an overnight ferry to mainland Europe.
The group will then finish on day two with a 58-mile (93km) cycle along The Netherlands’ magnificent coastal route, which will also take in the vibrant cities of The Hague and Leiden. The day ends with a congratulatory reception at the NH Grand Krasnapolsky Hotel, attended by the FIDI Board. The Cycle Challenge is open to all FIDI Affiliates.
It is not for the faint-hearted, but will leave you with lasting memories of not only completing the 141-mile (226 km) course, but also knowing you did so for a great cause – Operation Smile Honduras – which offers children a future via lifesaving surgery.
How it works
The basic idea is for every participant to raise sponsorship among colleagues, friends and family. The ride will be expertly managed by Challenge Central, which is a specialist organiser of events such as these. The Challenge Central team will be there for every pedal stroke along the way, while a support vehicle will carry your personal belongings and meet you at each checkpoint.
You will also have the option for your bikes to be transported back to the UK following the challenge – allowing you to explore Amsterdam in all its glory and attend the FIDI Conference, with the reassurance of your bike getting safely back home.
Included in the £479 cost of participation is the support vehicle, cycle leaders, overnight ferry, finisher medal, refreshments along the way, support and follow up from FIDI throughout the registration process, checklists to ensure you are on track, a cycle jersey and group photo. You will need to bring your own bike, although a limited number of bikes can be hired on a first-come, first-served basis. It is recommended to use a road or hybrid bike, as a heavier mountain bike would make the challenge tougher.
A big thank-you to our FIDI Cycle Challenge sponsor, Reason Global Insurance, who will help us make this a memorable experience for everyone taking part.
FIDI has been supporting OSH as its main charity for the past three years. OSH provides surgical treatment
and follow up to children born with devastating facial malformations, such as cleft lip or cleft palate. OSH offers an integral care programme to patients, which does not just focus on the medical intervention and possible consecutive operations needed, but also on giving the children post-operational follow-ups, such as speech therapy, dental care and psychological aid.
